Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do here at Matthew Algie. That’s why we are incredibly proud to have been announced as Green Champion at this year’s Glasgow Business Awards.
The hotly contested award, sponsored by Scottish Power, recognised our ‘green initiatives’ throughout 2022, namely our new Peak & Wild range of coffees.
From the earliest stages of development, we wanted to give our customers to the opportunity to sell a coffee that was more than just ethically sourced and delicious. We wanted Peak & Wild to make a material impact on the environment and our communities.
That was why we decided to form a unique partnership with the John Muir Trust. This 3-year partnership will see over 2,500 young achieve the John Muir Award and will help to restore over 1,000 hectares Scotland’s Rainforest.
We are already seeing the impacts that Peak & Wild is having on the ground. After only six months, 487 John Muir Awards have been achieved in the City of Glasgow alone, 90% of these by young people aged 16 and under.
202 of these awards were completed by individuals who may face additional barriers to accessing nature based volunteering or outdoor activities, including those entitled to free school meals and individuals with a physical or learning disability.
An astonishing 5,747 hours of practical conservation volunteering has been undertaken in the local Glasgow community.
Rangers from the John Muir Trust, meanwhile, have been hard at work tackling the challenges that Scotland’s Rainforest is facing. At their Skye, Knoydart, Quinag and the Ben Nevis range properties they have been protecting this vulnerable habitat from the dangers of over-grazing, tackling the spread of non-native species such as rhododendron and are helping to restore the eco-system’s natural processes.

“Being crowned as Green Champion of our hometown Glasgow is the icing on the cake of what has been a brilliant year for Peak & Wild. It’s been a joy to work alongside the John Muir Trust and to hear of the positive impact our newest range of coffees is having,” said Matthew Algie’s Head of Marketing, Jill Wotherspoon.
“The feedback from our customers has been fantastic. There are now over 240 café outlets, from the South of England to the top of Scotland, who are proud to say that the coffee they serve is saving Scotland’s Rainforest.”
The awards, which were hosted by the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, also saw Matthew Algie nominated for the Net Zero Achievement award on the night. This comes hot on the heels of our Peak & Wild range being recognised as ‘Highly Commended’ in the Social Impact category at the coveted Footprint Drinks Sustainability Awards.
